Emerging Artist Award

New Borders - Winner of the Emerging Artist Award, 2022

Exhibited in The Stables at Seaton Delaval Hall - 17 May - Sunday 11 June 2023.

‘New Borders' is a project by Chantal Herbert in collaboration with Dami Fawehinmi. The project proposes to "Take up Space" and decolonise Seaton Delaval Hall in some small part. With an immersive audio piece, Chantal amplifies the voices of seven Global Majority individuals living in the North East, whilst Dami's photography gives a face to those heard. Chantal Herbert chose this room location for the exhibition as the space allows each piece to be displayed carefully, with ample space for reflective pause.

This exhibition directly responds to the 1770 painting 'John Delaval (1756 - 1775) as a Boy and an Unidentified Attendant'. The painting depicts a young John Delaval with an unknown Black attendant, and it is housed within the Seaton Delaval Hall collection. This attendant has no background or history, and New Borders seeks to reimagine the artwork with a contemporary context by giving the often unheard a voice and identity.

Each photo has been printed onto large boards and was displayed within Seaton Delaval Hall. Alongside the photography, is a 45-minute audio piece played on a loop. Please get in touch with me if you want to consider this exhibition for your gallery space..

About the North East Emerging Artist Award

The award, developed by Curator, Matthew Jarratt and Seaton Delaval Hall’s General Manager, Emma Thomas, is open to artists from all art forms and applications are encouraged from music/sound, theatre, film, fashion, literature and design as well as fine art.

Eight shortlisted artists are supported with a bursary and mentoring to develop their proposals. Two of those shortlisted proposals will then be awarded to be created and exhibited.

The award’s aim is to showcase site specific contemporary art in a historic context and to encourage emerging artists to develop proposals at Seaton Delaval Hall, one of the region’s most distinct historic settings.
